Physical Education
State law dictates that 1st through 5th grade students must have P.E. for 100 minutes per week. The 30 minutes per week of Physical Activity with Coach takes care of a portion of that time. Each classroom teacher provides physical education throughout the week. Several teachers lead their students in organized games, stretching, jogging, yoga, and calisthenics at the during the school day on the playground.
Basketball
Students in 2nd-5th grade are eligible to join the Cheetah Basketball team. Lead by Coach Andre and Coach Jason, the Emerson Cheetahs practice after school and play teams from across Oakland.
Soccer
Students in kindergarten through 3rd grade are eligible to join the Emerson Soccer club lead by Mr. Limata and a crew of parent and community volunteers. Students work on fundamentals and play each other each week at club practices. Working with East Bay United and Soccer Without Borders, the team hopes to branch out and play against other teams in the community.
Girls on the Run
Girls on the Run encourages pre-teen girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through dynamic, interactive lessons and running games, culminating in a celebratory 5k run. In the fall of 2017, Emerson had it's first Girls on the Run team. The group of 10 students in 3rd and 4th grade trained for 10 weeks to run a 5K race in Golden Gate Park. We hope to bring back this program in the 2018-2019 school year.
