Tips for Families
Schedule
- Class line up happens before 8:30, so arrive by 8:25AM to get to school on time. Teachers walk their classes inside at 8:30am.
- Dismissal is at 2:45PM every day except for Wednesdays when students are dismissed at 1:15PM
AM Drop-off
8:00am - 8:30am (Small Yard open w/supervision)
- SpEd students dropped off by parent/guardian or by bus - enter through the gate at front of Emerson on Lawton Ave.
- All other students - enter at lower Shafter Ave. at “Cheetah gate” (painted cheetah on concrete) to small yard
Parking
The Emerson side of Shafter Ave. between 45th St. and 48th St. is drop-off only between 8:00am and 8:30am (driver must stay in car).
If you would like to walk your student in, please avoid blocking the drop-off lane. There is plenty of space around the school to park legally. Don't ever block the driveways of our neighbors, we want them to like us!
Do not double park when dropping off, it's not safe for our kids!
Bicycles
We have bike racks at lower Shafter Ave. and Lawton Ave. entrances as well as inside the school by the kindergarten playground.
PM Pick Up
2:45pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and 1:15pm Wednesday
- TK and Kindergarten students - dismissed through the building double doors on upper Shafter Ave. (at 48th St.)
- 1st and 2nd grade students - dismissed through lower Shafter Ave. at “Cheetah gate”
- 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students - dismissed through gate on 45th St.
Students will only be released to designated parent/guardian on file or their pre-arranged after-school program (program staff will collect students from their classrooms)
NOTE: students not picked up by the scheduled time can be collected at the Main Office
Arriving Late
- Teachers take attendance within the first 15 minutes of class, so students not in line when the bell rings may be marked absent.
- Students who arrive after 8:30am must check in at the main office (Lawton Ave. entrance). They will then be marked present and tardy.
- Students will receive a tardy pass from the main office, and go to class.
Absences
If your student is out sick, please notify the office.
What to send with your child
- A backpack big enough to hold a 9x12 folder and their lunch.
- Lunch box or bag (labeled with name) containing lunch and beverage OR tell your child they'll be eating the cafeteria lunch.
Breakfast
Breakfast is free to all children and served in the classroom at the beginning of each day.
Lunch
Lunch is available for free to all students. You can find out what's for lunch on the OUSD website, though specific offerings may vary.
Note: Deliveries from outside sources such as UberEats, DoorDash etc. are not permitted, even if ordered by a parent.
After-School Programs
There are several options for after-school programs available to Emerson students.
